Ophthalmology
The department of Ophthalmology deals with eye related illness. We at the ophthalmology dept of SMMCH&RI, are well equipped in terms of human resource as well as infrastructure to deal with common as well as unique ophthalmic problems. We regularly diagnose and treat refractive errors, remove foreign bodies, conjunctivitis, cataract, uveal and retinal disorders (eg: diabetic and hypertensive retinopathy, age related macular degeneration), neuro ophthalmological disorders, squint, paediatric disorders, lid injuries ,orbital diseases and ocular trauma
All state of the art investigative modalities are available and done at anaffordable cost. Laser procedures for retina, glaucoma, cornea and cataract are performed by the experts inthe respective subspeciality. Surgeries for cataract (phacoemulsification and SICS), glaucoma(trabeculectomy), keratoplasty, squint, lid trauma and retinal problems are also treated .Community ophthalmology as outreach eye camps are conducted frequently in nearby districts under DBCS programme, to provide free treatment for the needy. School screening programes are also done for early recognition of refractive errors in other congenital anomalies.We also provide complete treatment by providing glasses with attractive frames at an affordable cost in our optical outlet.
Details Of The Curriculum For UG Program
The Department of Ophthalmology delivers undergraduate (MBBS) teaching strictly in accordance with the Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) guidelines recommended by the National Medical Commission.
Teaching–learning methods include interactive lectures, small-group discussions, case-based learning, demonstrations, and clinical postings in outpatient clinics, specialty units and community ophthalmic work. Students are trained to take a focused ophthalmic history, assess visual acuity, perform anterior segment examinations, and interpret basic ophthalmic investigations
Training is designed to develop essential competencies in the recognition, diagnosis, and initial management of common eye diseases, ocular emergencies, and ocular manifestations of systemic disorders.
The curriculum emphasizes early detection and prevention of blindness, with special focus on cataract, refractive errors, and community eye health. Clinical exposure, integrated teaching, and skill-based training foster evidence-based practice, ethical decision-making, and effective communication, ensuring graduates are competent to provide primary eye care and timely referral
Details Of The Curriculum For PG Program
The Postgraduate (MS) Ophthalmology program follows the National Medical Commission (NMC) competency-based curriculum, designed to produce skilled clinicians, proficient surgeons, and research-oriented academicians. Training blends strong theoretical knowledge with extensive hands-on clinical and surgical experience. Post graduates learn to master essential diagnostic tools such as slit-lamp bio- microscopy, ophthalmoscopy, Tonometry, OCT, perimetry, specular microscopy, CCT measurement, and B-scan ultrasonography, while gradually gaining expertise in surgeries including cataract (SICS and phacoemulsification) Skill progression from supervised learning to independent execution. Residents are actively engaged in seminars, journal clubs, case discussions, wet lab training and community eye care activities. A strong emphasis is placed on research, participation in scientific forums with case discussions, dissertations, publications, and conference presentations
Facilities Available And Clinical Services Provided
The Department of Ophthalmology offers comprehensive eye care supported by state-of-the-art facilities and advanced technology. Outpatient services include general eye clinics and dedicated specialty clinics forRetina, Cornea, Glaucoma, Uvea, Orbit & Oculoplasty, and Refractive Disorders. A fully equippedoperation theatre complex enables high-volume cataract surgeries—including phacoemulsification and small-incision techniques.
The department houses modern diagnostic units with optical coherence tomography, fundus imaging,visual field analysis, biometry, central corneal thickness (CCT) measurement, specular microscopy, B-scan ultrasonography and advanced refraction services to ensure precise evaluation and management. Advanced laser services include YAG laser for posterior capsulotomy and peripheral iridotomy, and panretinal photocoagulation (PRP) for retinal vascular disorders are available.
Emergency eye care is available round-the-clock for trauma, acute infections, and sudden vision loss.

Faculty and postgraduate students undertake clinical, epidemiological, and community-based research projects addressing diverse ocular diseases, with findings regularly published in peer-reviewed and indexed journals, contributing to evidence-based ophthalmic practice.
