Pharmacology
The Department of Pharmacology trains undergraduates to become confident in prescribing drugs rationally to treat common ailments and monitor adverse drug reactions. Students are also trained in applied and fundamental research, various concepts and principles of Pharmacology with recent advances and drug development process.
Details of the curriculum for UG program:
CBME curriculum for theory : Lecture, Small Group Discussion, Self Directed Learning, Seminar, Role play & AETCOM
CBME curriculum for practical: OSPE, CAL, Pharmacology & Toxicology charts discussion
Facilities available and clinical services provided (OP, IP, theatre, Lab, Radiology etc.,) Pharmacovigilance :
Pharmacovigilance is designated as Adverse Drug Reaction (ADR) Monitoring Centre in 2022, by Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, under National Pharmacovigilance Programme. The WHO, through National Coordinating Centre, Ghaziabad, has provided VigiFlow database access to the department for entry of data related to adverse drug reactions. There is a Pharmacovigilance committee comprising of faculty from Department of Pharmacology, Community Medicine, General Medicine & General Surgery. The faculty from Pharmacology department upload and send ADR forms to PvPI.
Materiovigilance:
Sri Muthukumaran Medical College Hospital & Research Institute was recognized as one of the functioning Medical Device Adverse Event monitoring Centre (MDMC) on 30th July, 2025, to monitor and report, any unexpected or inappropriate medical occurrence, unintended disease or injury, related to the medical device. A materiovigilance committee comprising of biomedical engineer, hospital operations staff, clinicians, technical associate and faculty from Pharmacology department was constituted to improve the data collection and causality assessment.
Pharmacotherapeutic services:
Drug related information required by physicians is provided by the faculty of department of Pharmacology.
- Computer Assisted Learninig(CAL) Lab:Training in Computer Assisted Learning through EXPHARM software. The department has well equipped lab with desktop computers, audio visual aids with access to CAL software to learn experimental Pharmacology through simulation.
Clinical Pharmacology Lab & Experimental Pharmacology Lab :
The laboratory has samples of various dosage forms and special drug delivery system for undergraduate research training. The department has simulation Mannikins for providing hands on training on various routes of drug administration. The department research lab is also equipped with instruments to carry out screening experiments
